SENATE UPDATE: Recess at Risk, Dems in the Dumps, and Rick Scott's New Ad
Senate eyes more confirmations, including former NV Senate candidate Sam Brown for Undersecretary of Veterans Affairs
Last Week
Under intensifying pressure to confirm President Trump’s nominees, Senate Republicans finally picked up the pace. The Senate confirmed 11 nominees, including a new chief of the Drug Enforcement Administration and three judges.
But with the Senate’s annual August recess set to begin in a few days, more than 200 nominees are still awaiting action!
President Trump has called on Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) to cancel recess — and grassroots conservatives are with him. A decision will be made very soon.
Last week, the Senate also began debating the first appropriations bill of the year — to fund military construction projects and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Conservative Spotlight
ERIC SCHMITT — A hearty SCF shout-out to Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) for shepherding the first Rescissions Package in a generation through the Senate this month. Schmitt was the Senate point-man on the bill that cut $9 billion from NPR, PBS, and USAID. As always, Establishment Republicans were very wary of real spending cuts — even for left-wing propaganda! But Schmitt never quit, working with the White House, Senate conservatives, and Republican leaders to get the bill over the finish line. Schmitt’s work on this issue is a perfect example of why SCF was founded — and the difference principled conservatives willing to fight for our values make in Washington.
RICK SCOTT — You’re going to love this. Over the weekend, Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) bought an airplane advertisement banner to fly over the beaches at Coney Island and Jones Beach in New York. New Yorkers on the verge of electing a woke, police-defunding Marxist as mayor looked up from the sand to a flying banner that read: “HATE SOCIALISM? US TOO! MOVE 2 FL.”
DEMOCRATS — Democrats — bless their hearts — are hitting rock bottom. On Thursday, the DNC published the tweet below. They meant it as an attack against President Trump on inflation, but their own graph shows the inflation spike came under Joe Biden! After a few hours of mockery, they deleted the post.
On Saturday, the Wall Street Journal published a new poll finding that an embarrassing 63 percent of Americans now hold a negative view of the party. Finally, on Sunday, New York’s socialist mayoral candidate — Zohran Mamdani — was caught hosting a lavish, three-day wedding bash at his family’s ritzy compound in Africa, replete with armed guards and cellphone-jamming technology. It was the perfect illustration of what the Left has become today — wealthy, globalist elites flaunting privileges they want to deny everyone else. And they wonder why Americans don’t trust them!
This Week
The Senate has one vote scheduled so far for this week: to confirm David Wright as a member of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Several other nominees are also teed up for potential votes this week, including our old friend Sam Brown!
Brown, you’ll remember, was the SCF-endorsed candidate for U.S. Senate in Nevada last year. A decorated war hero and longtime advocate for veterans, Brown has been tapped by President Trump to serve as Undersecretary of Veterans Affairs for Memorial Affairs.
The Senate will also continue working on the MilCon-VA appropriations bill. But once again, the big issue of the week is those nominations. What do Senate Republicans care more about: Trump’s agenda or their own vacations?
Thank you for being part of our team. Thank you for helping us build a conservative Senate and fight for America’s future.
