Pressure Mounts on Democrats for Voter ID
Turn up the heat by contacting your U.S. Senators today
The Senate continues to debate the SAVE America Act, which would secure our elections — something Senate Democrats don’t want to do.
Thankfully, the pressure on them is so intense right now that Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was forced to say that Democrats support Voter ID.
Really? Maybe rhetorically, but not when it comes to legislating.
Public pressure is mounting, but we can’t let up.
Senate Floor Update
Here’s a short video from Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) on how Democrats have no substantive arguments against the bill.
The Setup
As you know, the SAVE America Act requires proof of citizenship to register to vote and a photo ID to cast a ballot in federal elections. It has 51 co-sponsors. It has 85% public support — one of the most popular pieces of legislation.
On March 17, the Senate voted 51–48 to begin debate. That was the easy part. The battle is over getting a clean, simple majority vote to pass it.
Senate Conservatives saw this coming. Our strategy is to force every vote, expose every dodge, and make Democrats own this on the record.
Yesterday, a unanimous consent request was made to pass the Voter ID provision in the bill independently. The Democrats objected.
It was a trap, and Democrats walked straight into it.
By blocking even the isolated voter ID provision — stripped of every other element, every amendment, every add-on — Senate Democrats made their position undeniable. Their objection is not to the bill’s structure, not to the other provisions, not to the process. Their objection is to voter ID itself.
They believe that requiring American citizens to show identification to vote in federal elections damages their electoral coalition. They’ve been obscuring that position for two decades. On the Senate floor this week, they couldn’t.
Our Senators Are Fighting
The coalition that showed up this week is the strongest we’ve seen on any single piece of legislation in years.
Senator Ashley Moody (R-FL) went to the floor and systematically dismantled Democratic talking points.
Senator Eric Schmitt (R-MO) went further: he added conservative amendments forcing Democrats to cast votes on the record against banning transgender surgery for minors and against protecting women’s sports.
Senator Mike Lee (R-UT), who has been the intellectual architect of the pro-voter-ID legislative strategy for months, put it plainly to Republican colleagues: letting this bill fail would be politically “suicidal.”
All of our supported Senators are in on the action. All of them are speaking on the Senate floor, attending press conferences, and doing local and national media interviews. We’re united and fighting for America’s future.
Take Action
The debate on the SAVE America Act is ongoing, but the outcome is not decided. And the truth is, Senate Republican leaders are looking for an exit ramp. Your voice can make sure they don’t find one.
The most effective thing you can do is contact your senators and tell them to pass the SAVE America Act with 51 votes. No delays. No procedural gimmicks.
The senators who fought this week deserve our support. The Democrats who blocked a clean voter ID vote deserve accountability. And the SAVE America Act deserves to become law.
The fight is not over. It’s just getting started.
