After sixteen years, Utah's senior senator remains a conservative warrior
Mike Lee (R-UT) is the ironman of the U.S. Senate. The Utah conservative stalwart does more legislative work in a month than most of his colleagues do in an entire year.
Look at what Lee has been up to since the last congressional recess:
He has led the fight to pass his SAVE America Act voter ID bill through the Senate by forcing Democrats to conduct a talking filibuster. He has methodically won over 49 Senate cosponsors — enough yeses to pass the bill with Vice President J.D. Vance’s tie-breaking vote. Even President Trump is now on board with the strategy.
Lee just stood up for football fans against the exploding costs of streaming NFL games on TV. NFL broadcasts all used to be free. Now, some fans pay close to $1,000 a year to watch games. Lee wrote to the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission, asking for a review of the Sports Broadcasting Act to determine whether Big Tech and the NFL’s streaming deals violate antitrust laws.
Most recently, Lee introduced a bill to etch constitutional carry rights into federal law. No more should Americans be forced to get a state’s permission to exercise their right to arm and protect themselves in public.
Remember, Senator Lee is chairman of the powerful Energy and Natural Resources Committee. He has a lifetime conservative voting record close to 100%. He could easily be resting on his laurels or feathering his nest with an eye toward a lucrative lobbying career.
But 16 years after his stunning takedown of a RINO incumbent, Lee is still the hardest-working man in the Senate.
By all means, grassroots conservatives should be frustrated that Congress is full of do-nothing Republicans. But we should also remember how lucky we are to have tireless workhorses like Lee.
It would be great to have ten more Mike Lees — but imagine how much worse Congress would be with one less!
