John Cornyn Snipes at Mike Lee
The GOP Establishment does not want their voters to know the truth
Maybe you’ve seen this movie before. An establishment Republican politician swears he’s a principled, fighting conservative.
Then, the second he becomes a lame duck, he pulls off the mask and trashes the conservatives he used to call his friends.
Mitt Romney. Mitch McConnell. Thom Tillis. Bill Cassidy. And now… John Cornyn.
Senator Cornyn was defeated last month in Texas’s Republican primary by conservative Attorney General Ken Paxton.
No sooner were the votes counted than Cornyn lashed out against the Right.
He gave an interview to the New York Times criticizing Paxton and President Trump. He’s insulted conservative activists.
And in a recent late-night social media post, Cornyn even attacked conservative Senator Mike Lee.
As you know, Lee has been fighting to pass the SAVE America Act in the Senate. That’s the bill that would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and a valid ID to get a ballot. Voter ID is one of the most popular reform ideas in the country, with 70% public support.
Lee has been urging Republican Leader John Thune to force Democrats to conduct a traditional, talking filibuster rather than just let them block the bill without a fight. That could enable the Senate to pass the bill with only 50 votes (plus Vice President J.D. Vance’s tiebreaker).
When Senator Lee once again called on Thune to bring voter ID to the floor, Cornyn attacked the conservative leader. “You don’t have the votes,” he snapped. “It is math.”
Except… Cornyn is wrong.
In early June, the House-passed version of voter ID received 50 votes in the Senate. It didn’t pass the Senate because of special procedural rules. But Lee is right: the votes are there.
Voter ID can pass the Senate, just as conservatives said all along. Thune should fight to pass it even if it means working nights and weekends. Election integrity is worth it.
Being a conservative in Washington isn’t just about what you believe. It’s about what you’re willing to fight for. Cornyn resents that — and the fighting, principled conservatives who walked the walk while he only talked the talk.
That’s why Ken Paxton won the primary. And why SCF and grassroots conservatives around the country are all-in on this race.
While the Establishment quietly hopes Paxton loses to James “God is Non-Binary” Talarico, we know what’s at stake.
