And just like that, the new Republican Congress is starting to Make America Great Again.
On January 7, the new U.S. House of Representatives passed its first bill: the Laken Riley Act. Named after the 22-year-old Georgia nursing student murdered by an illegal immigrant last year, the bill would mandate detention for illegal aliens who are arrested for burglary and theft.
It’s an important first step in a much larger effort to regain control of our southern border. But the fight is not over.
The bill now moves to the Senate, where new Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) has scheduled the Laken Riley Act for a vote on Friday.
Please take one minute to tell your senators to support it.
As you know, 60 votes are required to end debate and pass bills in the Senate, so we will need 8 Democrats to see the light … or feel the heat. Either one will do.
Victory is possible. Several Senate Democrats have already endorsed the bill, which is a complete 180° from last year.
When was the last time Democrats didn’t condemn a border security measure as cruel and racist and evil? This is what we mean when we say elections have consequences.

This is just one bill, one fight — and there are many more to come. But this is the beginning of a much bigger effort to fulfill the 2024 election mandate.
