Dem Filibuster Would Nuke Themselves
Forcing a talking filibuster is good policy and good politics
We all know the policy reasons Senate Republicans should force Democrats into a talking filibuster of the “SAVE America Act.” The strategy is the only chance Congress has to pass a national voter ID law before the 2026 elections.
The new and improved SAVE America Act does three things:
Mandates photo ID to vote
Requires proof of citizenship to register
Removes non-citizens from voter rolls
Voter ID is necessary. It’s fair. And it works. Thirty-six states and democracies worldwide already have voter ID laws. Contrary to liberal fear-mongering, states with voter ID see voter turnout increase. This makes sense: the more voters trust our elections again, the more they want to participate in them!
But there is also a political argument for forcing a real filibuster: the SAVE America Act is the most popular bill Congress has introduced in years!
Polls show 84% of the country supports voter ID, including 71% of Democrats! The American people like secure elections. They don’t want fraud or illegal immigrants voting. They want voter ID.
If Democrats really want to scream and yell, 24/7, against an urgent, wildly popular bill, Republican leaders should let them! One of the GOP’s best messages right now is that Democrats are lawless cheats who want to take away citizens’ sovereignty.
With a true talking filibuster, Democrats would be volunteering to MAKE REPUBLICANS’ ARGUMENT FOR THEM!
Also, have you heard Democrats talk about voter ID? They don’t just say it’s a bad idea. They say it’s racist! Un-American! Jim Crow 2.0!
This is the same kind of cringe rhetoric they will bring to a filibuster. Democrats want to call the whole country — including their own party — bigots on live television for days on end.
Republicans couldn’t dream up campaign ads this good!
The SAVE America Act talking filibuster strategy is great for America. But it is also great for Republicans worried about losing in 2026.
Good policy is good politics.
