Conservatives Expose Anti-Israel Left
Conservatives file rogue cloture petition to force vote on Israel funding
Senate conservatives just pulled off the biggest legislative coup of the year. And they showed, once again, why Establishment Republicans’ mantra of “Accept, Appease, Accommodate” is nonsense.
The story begins in the House of Representatives, where conservatives passed a bill to send $14 billion in emergency military aid to our embattled allies in Israel - paid for by $14 billion in cuts to the Internal Revenue Service.
Senate Democrats smugly declared the bill dead on arrival in the upper chamber. Republican leaders did their usual “Aw shucks, if only we had the votes” routine. (What they only whisper is that, like the Democrats, they want to delay Israel aid until we send more money to Ukraine and other countries, too.) Leaders on both sides agreed the Senate would never even consider the House bill.
And as far as the Establishment and the corporate media were concerned, that was that. Senate conservatives had other ideas.
Senators Mike Lee, Ron Johnson, Ted Cruz, and others quietly collected signatures for a procedural motion to force the Senate to vote on the House bill. It was a sneak attack — what Senate insiders call a “rogue cloture petition,” unsanctioned by either party’s leadership. It worked.
All of a sudden, the Senate was stuck. Leaders did not want to vote on the question but could not get out of it, either. Conservatives held their ground for hours of quorum calls and procedural shenanigans until, eventually, Chuck Schumer cried uncle and called for the yeas and nays.
Every single Republican voted for the bill, and every single Democrat voted against it. So yes, the bill went down — the United States will not be transferring $14 billion from the IRS to the Israeli military. But Americans will now know why — and who made that decision.
RINOs are right that it’s hard to pass legislation in the Senate from the minority. But it’s actually not that hard to score wins even without 51 votes. You just have to want to. You just have to fight. Senate conservatives just proved it.
The next time you hear a Beltway RINO say that since Republicans don’t have the votes, there is no point in fighting, remind them of the time that a small handful of Senate conservatives exposed the entire Democrat Party as pro-IRS, anti-Israel partisan hacks.
Thank you for being part of our team and doing so much to help us build a conservative Senate. We’re grateful for your support!
