Confronting the "Give Up" Caucus
President Trump will meet privately with Senate Republicans today to discuss the SAVE America Act election integrity bill
President Trump will have lunch with Senate Republicans on Capitol Hill today.
One of the topics will be the SAVE America Act and what the party should do, if anything, to break Democrat obstruction of the election integrity bill supported by over 80% of Americans.
On one side, you have President Trump and Senate Conservatives like Mike Lee (R-UT) and Rick Scott (R-FL) who believe the party should mount a relentless floor fight to achieve victory.
On the other side, you have Senate Republican Leader John Thune (R-SD) and recently defeated Senator John Cornyn (R-TX), who believe Republicans should give up.
Their argument is “math.” They say we simply don’t have the votes.
Thune went so far as to tell reporters this week that Lee’s advocacy for the bill on social media “doesn’t reflect the facts on the ground” and that Lee is ignoring the “hard realities” of the situation.
The problem with that argument, of course, is that we do have 51 votes to pass the bill with Vice President JD Vance.
What these senators really mean is that breaking a Democrat filibuster will be hard and time-consuming. What they are really saying is that securing our elections is not their top priority and not worth the effort.
And if you had any doubt about where Thune stands, consider this: Last week, Senate Republicans leaked information against Mike Lee from inside a private caucus lunch for his fight to pass the SAVE America Act. Now, reportedly, Thune is hoping senators will use today’s meeting with President Trump to speak out against the bill. That’s not opposition to Democrats. That’s opposition to conservatives — and to the 80% of Americans who want this bill passed.
And sadly, when the shoe is on the other foot, and conservatives are blocking a liberal measure, the Republican establishment doesn’t give up. They never tell the Democrats to pound sand and insult their ability to count votes. No, they collude with their allies in the media to attack conservatives until they back down.
And that is exactly what Senate Republicans would do to the Democrats now to pass the SAVE America Act if they wanted to win.
Imagine if Republicans forced the Democrats to work weekends and through the August recess and forced them to publicly defend their support for non-citizen voting — a position that is opposed by 67 percent of their own party!
The Senate is broken, and it’s broken because we have too many Republicans who are either too liberal or too lazy to fight for our country’s future.
President Trump and Senate Conservatives will confront the “Give Up” caucus behind closed doors later today. And, as usual, we should expect the RINOs to leak unfavorable stories to their media mouthpieces.
Nevertheless, we should all pray that the discussion inspires more Republicans to step away from the failed strategy of surrender and to believe again that America is great and she’s worth fighting for.
